Distributed File Systems

History, Taxonomy, and Cutting Edge Ideas

Abstract

This website attempts to organize current efforts into distributed file systems. A (very) brief evolution of file systems is given along with some trends that underscore the nature of distributed data. Next, a classification scheme is presented. This taxonomy allows for direct comparisons of various solutions to the many file system issues that will be faced in the next several years. The following section describes various state-of-the-art solutions to implementation of many of these problems. After that, a presentation of my thoughts as to the direction this field will take. There is also a set of links directly to many of the projects mentioned in this website.
